Callosa de Segura Area Guide

Callosa de Segura is in the province of Alicante, within the Valencian Community, in the region of the Vega Baja del Segura. The economy of the population is based on the service sector industry and agriculture. The central industry is the manufacture of threads, ropes and nets besides footwear. In agriculture, the cultivation of citrus and vegetables is quite remarkable.

In this population it is to emphasize the School of Hemp that is promoted by the City council Torrevieja The Orihuela Costa including Punta Prima Los Altos Playa Flamenca are less than 20 minute drive away

The wealth and heritage of Callosa de Segura is quite significant with different monuments and buildings from various eras.

The old town, located at the foot of the Sierra de Callosa in this area we will find the Arciprestal Church of San Martín, built in the 16th century in Renaissance style.

We can also see the San Roque Sanctuary erected in honor of its patron San Roque, the Castle of Callosa, located in the mountain of Callosa to an altitude of 200 meters on the level of the sea. The heritage of Dolores, starting at the beginning of the 17th century, the Heritage of the Rosary, the Heritage of the Virgin of the Pillar (la Pilarica), dating from 1947, the Chapel of San Francisco, the Market of Abastos, built in 1929, the House of the Belenista.

The gastronomy of the place is characterized by dishes such as rice dishes, light dishes based on cod, other dishes with porridge and clams, Pumpkin with honey …

With a location in the region of Vega Baja del segura, here you can find a very well located municipality an area of approximately 25 square kilometers where there is a population more than 18 thousand inhabitants.

It is said that the origin of the municipality is very old, according to various investigations, there was a settlement of great importance dating from the Bronze Age and stands out as the first metal culture in the whole peninsula.

Similarly archaeological sites found in its territory show the town founded here was of great importance, either as a capital or site of strategic value, because it was the center of The Argaric civilization, serving as a strategic point.

According to investigations and archaeological excavations, the origin of the modern enclave of the municipality can be found in the Bronze Age, even Roman, in the Middle Ages where it was apparently found a villa which began to grow to a large extent.

It seems that the town grew under the domination of the Arabs which gave it the name of Callosa de Segura, so during this period its culture was influenced by the fact of finding under the control of the Arabs although, soon after the territory was recovered.

There were several economic activities highlighted, the natural industry of hemp was the most outstanding because the production of ropes and other products from hemp stood out being the maritime industrial sector of ropes, moorings and cables.

The hemp industry, both in cultivation and in use for the maritime industry, went through a major crisis where most of the inhabitants lost their source of employment, which caused many to migrate to France, Germany and Switzerland, but then the industry soon recovered with the use of synthetic materials.

The municipality has managed to grow not only in economy but in population also in services. Callosa de Segura is now a great source of tourism, its heritage and centers of interest manage to attract a large number of tourists
